Qatar Airways announces new flight direct from Sydney to Malta via Doha

In 1915, World War One was spreading beyond Europe’s Western Front. This posed a great challenge for Europe’s armies in their defence against the enemy forces.

With greater battle campaigns presented with it more casualties, but where to treat them? The answer was a tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean, known as Malta.

Hundreds of thousands of wounded soldiers were transferred to what was referred to as the “Nurse of the Mediterranean” many of these soldiers were Anzacs, injured during the Gallipoli landing.

More than 100 years on, and the relationship between Malta and Australia continues. And now Qatar Airways is making it easier for Aussies to visit this stunning rock on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Traditionally, Australian passengers wanting to visit Malta would need to do so via London. But now, that’s changed. Qatar Airways can fly you directly from Sydney to Malta via Doha.

Flights leave daily during the European summer and range in price. And at just under 6 hours in the air, Doha to Malta is a breeze.

Malta is an Island rich in both history and culture – it’s also a relaxing paradise, with a breathtaking coastline and sandy beaches on the shores of the Mediterranean.

There are restaurants with stunning views, trendy shopping precincts, and for the history buffs, a seemingly never-ending number of 15th-century churches, cathedrals, tombs and ancient relics.

Malta is also very well known for its nightlife and party scene, and with a vast array of nightclubs, bars, restaurants and wine bars, you’ll never be far from a good time.

There’s also a lively arts and music scene, with lots of festivals to attend during the summer season, as well as during the quieter winter months.

An absolute must when visiting Malta is a trip to the Blue Lagoon. Located on the island of Comino – a 25-minute ferry ride from the mainland – this aquamarine coloured ‘swimming pool’ is postcard-worthy.

At four square kilometres, Comino is virtually uninhabited, car-free and can get crowded so it’s a good idea to get there early.

All-in-all, Malta is a family friendly island paradise and the Maltese people are among the friendliest in the world.
