Minister of Economy: Qatar Attaches Great Importance to Multilateral Trading System

Qatar attaches great importance to international multilateral trading system as it had founded an office for the Ministry of Economy and Commerce at the World Trade Organization’s headquarters in Geneva, said HE the Minister of Economy and Commerce Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani.



Speaking during a meeting with WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo who is currently in Doha, HE the Minister of Economy and Commerce added that this demonstrates Qatar’s commitment to active participation in the work of the organization as it is the cornerstone of international trade.

During the meeting, they discussed a number of issues of mutual interest, including the need that member states complete the remaining elements of the Doha work program. They also reviewed the achievements of the State of Qatar in relation to the conduct of trade agreement, as it completed special measures according to category (A) notifications in terms of modernizing transit transport infrastructure and adopting customs single window system.

Furthermore, the State of Qatar ratified the conduct of trade agreement and adopted the relevant legal instruments.

On the ongoing discussions in the WTO on the future work, HE the Minister of Economy and Commerce said the Doha work program is a priority as it supports development process, pointing to the keenness of most member states to discuss the remaining issues of the Doha round after Nairobi.

He expressed his confidence that the World Trade Organization under the leadership of Roberto Azevedo will play an active role in achieving the goals of sustainable development.



For his part, the WTO Director General expressed his appreciation for the accomplishments achieved by the State of Qatar over the past years in commercial policies, and also appreciated Qatar’s active role in the organization current efforts to reach agreement on future work program. (QNA)
